… a man cannot inquire either about what he knows or about what he does not know – for he cannot inquire about what he knows, because he knows it, and in that case is in no need of inquiry; nor again can he inquire about what he does not know, since he does not know about what he is to inquire.

The Catalog

The catalog is listing academic and specialist literature from all relevant national and international publishing houses. All bibliographies in NEWBOOKS catalog have been screened editorially and electronically optimised. Thus we guarantee the greatest possible accurate access to relevant information. The bibliographies are enriched with significant additional information from different sources.

On average we process 4000 new titles a week. Excellent contacts with publishing houses and our ONIX Preview Service guarantee the early incorporation of forthcoming and new publications. Moreover, we process pdf-previews, advance internet notices, e-mail distribution lists, evaluate review services and actively supplement the information received from the websites of publishing houses.

Booksellers and publishing houses use the catalog for specialist client information about new titles with advance notification as well as backlist titles from all subject areas. For this NEWBOOKS places the latest and most current publications online hourly.

The catalog provides

  • An organised system with approx. 2000 specialist areas and thus a very accurate search facility for  back list and new titles as well as advance notifications from all scientific areas.
  • An organised  system based on the BIC, GBV and BISAC classifications and thus mappings of classification systems at title level, e.g. BIC codes for German language titles
  • A more refined categorisation according to the type of publication e.g. searches for conference proceedings, festschrifts, biographies, law commentaries, practical handbooks etc.
  • Comprehensive, mostly manually enriched information texts and additional information, e.g. reviews, contents lists, sample texts etc.
  • Complete text search (i.e. search of all additional information) as well as inter-disciplinary searches in related subject areas.
  • The taking over of subject researches in existing or non-existing newsletter subject profiles.
  • Hit word search via the NEWBOOKS hit word index
  • A data base design orientated along the ONIX standard, which enables exports into every format desired, e.g. ONIX, MARC-21 etc.
  • ONIX Service for publishing houses (conversion of your preview into ONIX)

Differentiated data management and finely tuned subject indexing enable the specialist book catalog to be fine tuned according to nearly every need: thematically ordered book lists and RSS Feeds, Newsletter sorted in advance according to specialist areas and Proposal Lists (approval plans) to link with external websites, just like complete Data Exports in ONIX/CSV or Individual Title Retrieval in the desired format, are routine.

Above all we enable an easy and almost automatic use of the catalog via Web Services. Here should be emphasized a Title - Web Service as well as an Merchandise Management - Web Service. We offer help for implementing the Web Services on your website and provide long-term support.
