… a man cannot inquire either about what he knows or about what he does not know – for he cannot inquire about what he knows, because he knows it, and in that case is in no need of inquiry; nor again can he inquire about what he does not know, since he does not know about what he is to inquire.

NEWBOOKS Classification & Mapping

Current Situation

In the German speaking regions, the search for a generally recognized and universally used classification system continues in vain. Currently, the German Warengruppensystematik (WGS) and the German national library's (DNB) functional groups, arranged as per Dewey Decimal classification (DDC), are in use. However, both systems have proven themselves unsuitable for providing booksellers and publishing customers with a sophisticated scientific search.

In librarianship, the basic classifications of the Common Library Network (GBV) and the Regensburger classification  (RVK) are mainly used. In international book trading, the Book Industry Communication (BIC) and Book Industry Standards and Communications (BISAC) systems are used, where BIC offers a more scientific approach in comparison to BISAC.

Our Solution

This intial situation has inspired NEWBOOKS to develop a classification scheme according to which specialist titles are editorially classified and made accessible in a customer-oriented way. However, the NEWBOOKS classification is still based on the codification of other standard classification schemes such as BIC and BISAC.
Our classification offers a choice of 50 main subjects, which are sub-divided into approx. 2,000 minor subjects. The classification is dynamically planned, and can therefore easily pick up 'trends' (e.g. in neuro and cognitional science) and special customer needs (e.g. 'International accounting', 'construction standards' etc). If a new area is introduced into the classification, the entire inventory is developed rearwards according to the requirements of the new area.

Through this, booksellers, publishers and libraries are offered new possibilities for using the NEWBOOKS classification. Some examples:

The NEWBOOKS classification is used to inform regular customers by Newsletter, RSS Feeds or Proposal Lists or online searches about thematically pre-sorted new releases und backlist titles.

German-language titles can also be equipped with BIC codes through our classification in order to therefore create a unified classification scheme of English and German academic and professional literature for online searches. NEWBOOKS classifications are generally being used through a Web Service or through regular Raw Data Exports.

A further example is the mapping of an existing publishing classification scheme in the direction of national and international standards. Our long-term cooperation with the Springer Verlag (Heidelberg) also includes the creation of mappings between Springer's own classification and the BIC and BISAC standard classification schemes.

But even a simple Upload of an ISBN List will deliver the desired classification results and the according formats for easy and quick provision of comprehensive topic lists for your regular customers.
