… a man cannot inquire either about what he knows or about what he does not know – for he cannot inquire about what he knows, because he knows it, and in that case is in no need of inquiry; nor again can he inquire about what he does not know, since he does not know about what he is to inquire.

Listing of Titles: Data Transfer & Formats

How are bibliographic records listed at NEWBOOKS?

Participating scientific and specialist publishers notify our catalogue editing department about their titles, both new publications and their backlist. After receipt, these are imported into our ONIX database. After the data has been read, the titles are classified by the editorial team and/or allocated to the relevant subjects of our taxonomy. Data synchronisation with the NEWBOOKS online systems takes place continuously. New publications are also automatically added to the NEWBOOKS newsletter and proposal lists, so that clients are informed about current titles straight away.

Which data do we need?

For titles to be processed optimally, we particularly need:

- general bibliographic book data (author, title, subtitle, series, edition, number of pages, publishing data, price, language and ISBN number (13 to 10 digits)

- preferably further data such as abstracts, contents, reviews, extracts, author information, target group etc. as well

- preferably cover illustrations of titles as jpg or pdf files or similar as well

The more comprehensive the data, the better, as customers will then have more information about your specialist publications!

How is data sent? Data formats and transfer methods

In principle, the title data can be sent in an arbitrary, but necessarily structured format. Ideally, the notification should be made in the ONIX format. Alternatively, delivery in Excel/CSV, KNOe ‘asterisk’ format is also possible.

If you prefer a different format, please send us an example of the corresponding file to test. We will notify you immediately if we can handle the format.

Cover images should best be sent as jpg files (named with the 13-digit ISBN number, ie. ‘ISBN.jpg’). Size does not matter, as images are automatically scaled by us. Basically, the highest possible resolution is desirable in order to visually represent the product optimally for our customers.

In general, you can transfer all your data to us a data stock download, and continuous modified notifications by FTP. We are happy to arrange FTP access for you on request.

Alternatively, you can also send your data by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Must the books be reported by publishers?

If you notify us about your products regularly, we can make sure that they are processed promptly. We would of course like to inform our customers about your new publications and current top titles quickly, comprehensively and with high quality data. We can best ensure this if you regularly notify us about your products.
